Takayama Old Town
A beautifully preserved Edo-era merchant town in the Hida mountains — dark-wood streets, sake breweries, morning markets and famous Hida beef.
Plan your visitHigh in the Hida mountains, Takayama kept its Edo-era heart while the rest of Japan modernised. Its old town is a place to slow down — to walk dark-wood lanes, taste local sake, and eat some of the best beef in the country.
The old streets
The heart of Takayama is the Sanmachi district: three narrow streets lined with Edo-period merchant houses in dark timber, their latticed fronts now home to sake breweries, cafés and craft shops. It's one of the best-preserved old townscapes in Japan, and simply walking it is the main pleasure.
Sake, markets and Hida beef
Takayama's pure mountain water made it a town of sake brewers; look for the round cedar balls (sugidama) hung at brewery doors, and join a tasting of Hida sake. By the river, the Miyagawa morning market and the Jinya-mae market sell produce, pickles and crafts from early morning. And everywhere you'll find Hida beef — on skewers, as nigiri sushi, or grilled.
A window into Edo government
The Takayama Jinya is the only surviving Edo-period regional government house of its kind. Because the Hida region was rich in timber, it was governed directly by the shogunate, and the Jinya's offices, tatami rooms and rice storehouse give a rare, vivid picture of how the country was run.
When to go
Takayama is famous for the Takayama Festival, held in mid-April and mid-October, when towering, ornately decorated floats fill the streets — one of Japan's three most beautiful festivals. Autumn is gorgeous, and the morning markets are best, naturally, in the morning.
Make it part of your trip
Takayama combines perfectly with Shirakawa-go (about 50 minutes by bus) for a one- or two-day trip into the mountains. We can arrange transport and an English- or Vietnamese-speaking guide from Nagoya — tell us your dates and we'll plan it.
